Not sure if this works but "VIP Luggage Delivery" service may be another option.

Just check the baggage to MIA at GIG and re-checkin at MIA for MIA-JFK with the delivery service.
The fee is $29.95 up to 40 miles from JFK though.
I used them a few weeks ago for a collection in SEA. I was flying BOS-JFK (one ticket) connecting to JFK-MIA-SEA. The BagsVIP site says that a special indicator is printed on the bag tag (you provide the PNR when you book the service) but when I didn't notice anything different about the tag when checking in at BOS, I asked the agent about it. He had no idea what I was talking about.
A bit worried about the bag, when I got to the JFK lounge, I had them call the baggage service and they had everything all ready for collection. They even asked me when I wanted it once I got to Seattle. My plans were to spend the night at a SeaTac hotel, meet a friend in downtown Seattle, then go to the hotel in Bellevue. I had then deliver the bag to Bellevue and it was at the hotel desk when I arrived.

You could have BagsVIP collect the bag from JFK, hold it for a few hours, then deliver it to where ever you need in New York.
