I just tried awardtravelr.com and it is totally useless. I tried a range of searches from North America (various airports) to LHR on 07-10-2013 where BA.com shows availability and awardtravelr shows none.
Just to clarify..

When you say 'BA.com shows availability', do you mean you tried a dummy booking on BA.com or that you used the BA reward availability checking tool? The latter was known to be a little flaky. If you used the former then I'd agree with your conclusions. If you used the latter it may be BA.com's reward checker that's not right and not awardtravelr.
