To me, first class usually means four out of five stars, although the French rating system traditionally has five star and five star luxe properties. Many of these national rating systems are based on lists of specific facilities and services that can be irrelevant to me, so that often a first class hotel is larger and more expensive than I need without the fun of it being unique or luxurious.
