I am not so sure that there is no advanced gate info, there is just very little of it. My last flight out of LHR I arrived 2 1/2 or 3hrs ahead of departure, you can never rely on hitting traffic on the M40 or M25. My boarding pass actually had the gate on it right away, this is probably the first time in 12 or more trips where I didn't have to wait for the T-60 gate announcement or have to ask in the lounge.
