With the railway system in Great Britain there is an additional mechanism for keeping us peasantry from unnecessarily disturbing on train staff, by ensuring that even when the platform is announced the train doors are kept locked until around two minutes before the train is due to depart. This in turn ensures that the train departs late in proper British fashion.
I suspect this is the real reason for the phasing out of slam-door stock.
