Were you looking at FNT-MSP-SFO or FNT-DTW-SFO, or FNT-ATL-SFO? I have no proof of this, but I suspect the fare will go up if someone takes the last seat in the fare bucket on EITHER FNT-XXX or XXX-SFO. It doesn't have to be that someone buys an FNT-SFO ticket.
Also, a bunch of the FNT-ATL flights for this winter were downgauged this weekend from MD-88 to CR9. With this reduction in capacity comes more volatility in price.
Lots of reasonable explanations on what happened that don't include shenanigans. But my bet would be this was a fare sale that got pulled. (BTW, if you do find FNT-SFO for $315 again I'd love to know about it. . . almost mileage run material if routing through ATL!)
