In the mid-80s, when first in SE Asia, I was often served beer in a handle or glass with ice.

Whilst initially rejecting this as a kind of taste sacrilege, after a while I found it was OK. The locals were all doing it; it keep the beer cold; and obviously diluted the beer. The latter seemed to mean that the effects of alcohol were acquired much later in the night (for good or I'll), and in effect I was drinking low alcohol beer.

Of course, the more recent practise of drinking from bottles has put paid to this idea. When living in Bangkok for a period recently, I would on a rare occasion ask for ice in a glass and revert to beer and ice to eke out the evening......
