Book below the class and ask to upgrade at the desk. I find that at the desk cheap upgrades are much more easily obtainable. Unfortunately I probably won't rent again until January, but I'll probably get an ICAR and use Gold Choice; if they don't have what I want I will definitely ask about it. I wouldn't mind paying an extra $5 per day for a very nice car.

Needed the car last minute. I'm renting at a Hertz in my town. They said they only had 2 choices, a Ford Escape not a 2013, and a Nissan Altima. Who knows what other choices they had elsewhere available. I am also trying to collect some discount codes to bring in when I pay for the rental (AAA and others).
I also wouldn't mind paying an extra $5 for a better looking car.
