I don't think that's the case anymore.
For the last couple of tickets, the TA has been more or dates not available that can be bought online. The TAs are able to cut you a better deal since they dip into their comission.
I just booked a flight for Korea and I went through travelocity. I called a couple of TAs in LA. They swore to me that the flight out of LAX on a specific date was full. I called the Asiana office in LA and tried to book through the them, no room. Then I checked all the online sites and travelocity had an Asiana flight on the date and flight I wanted. It was the only site that had that flight, I tried recreating it on ITA matrix which it found at a higher price, Expedia, directly through the Asiana website, these sites couldn't pull up the flight. So I bought it and it went through, confirmed seats with Asiana. Go figure.
