As your flight was on an EU carrier, and cancelled without informing you, you may be entitled to compensation under EU regulation 261/2004:

However, I don't know what the airline has to do to show they have 'contacted' you. If it's the case that they emailed you, but it went to spam, I've no idea whether they can claim that was enough effort.
