Since you only get a penny for every point when booking through their airfare search function, taking the 5% in gift cards would seem to make more sense than buying airfare. You might as well using the gift cards for other spending that you don't earn 5% on, and have the added convenience of booking with a "real" travel agency or with the airline itself.
