Cancelled Gold Business Rewards card, no retention offered. Had it since 1989, over $200k/year in spending, explained how much better Chase was, ie they answer the phone, double miles on hotels, 5x office supplies, etc.

A very poorly trained retention rep tried to tell me how much more valuable using amex points through their travel agency was vs. transferring them to a ff program. I slowly and methodically explained to him that if I converted 120,000 points I would get $1200 in value towards a ticket, and then explained if I transferred the same amount of points into United's program I could get a business class ticket to Asia worth about $5-6k. He really didn't have any clue, didn't have a grasp on what programs MR still had or how they worked. I wasn't fishing for bonus points, so he didn't offer.

This conversation was in stark contrast to one I had with a Chase business rep on their reconsideration line getting approved for an Ink card. Though I'm sure she was following a script, she clearly had had much more training, was way more knowledgeable about their product, and overall seemed twice as intelligent as the AMEX retention rep.

With the products Chase has, their bonuses, and great service, I have a feeling they're going to eat AMEX's lunch.
