Unless you are SE how are points more valuable to someone with status than to "mom and pop"? Even to SE, since the castration of IKK, I think you would be hard pressed to demonstrate 2.5x value.
Fair enough, I meant SE. Basing my valuation on latitude+upgrade, I do often get values in the 2.5 cents/mile range.
Which is quite a bit more than 2.5 times 0.23 cents.
This year, I redeemed four J tickets, with Canada-overseas legs on AC. Respectively 90k miles + $813, 105 k +$893, 95k+$191 and 95 k + $153.
Admittedly this was a good year, went to the right place. Just not sure I enjoy it that much though, a bit too long.
For the last tickets, I ended up buying miles at 2cents/mile. But yes, typically I would end up paying surcharges in the range $800-1000/ticket.
