Not sure what happened in your case as the NZ T&C relating to EY seem to say different.
Overall the EY experience was "ok" from my experience, although I'm still waiting for APD from AUH - SYD after 6 weeks. Might need to get on the phone as you've done.
I think given QF/EK partnership any future Middle East travel will be via them
