I certainly have not had any issues on a separate itineraries of two revenue tickets but I would not be too comfortable with a tight connection to an award leg (or even a revenue ticket - I don't like tight connections) as I am not sure how that would be treated. I suspect BA will rebook the passenger anyhow, though.
