EWR-SAN UA1228 arrives into terminal 1 and SAN-EWR UA1228 leaves out of terminal 2. Definitely different airplanes and be prepared to have to leave security, change terminals and re-clear security.
From terminal 1 to 2 it is probably faster to walk than wait for the inter-terminal bus. Just turn right out of the terminal 1 towards terminal 2.
