Uniteds 9 abreast 787s feature 17.3" wide seating against 17.5" for BAs 747s. Not the end of the world i'd suggest.

The only 2 operators with 8 abreast in Y are the 2 early adopters, It would be very surprising if any other airlines followed them. The standard has clearly become 9 abreast.
