I've never encountered a problem checking a bag all the way on *A. Is this an AA thing or a OW thing? Doesn't encourage me to use them more in the future that is for sure.
They did you a favor by not allowing your bag to overnight in JFK. You'd be lucky to see it again.

I've had the same situation in many airports around the U.S. You just have to make plans to overnight with your bags.
