Question Is the Call Centre meant to be friendly?

I've used the BA Call Centre a few times now, and I'm curious to know...are the staff supposed to say 'Hello', 'Good morning', or even 'how can I help you', or anything similar to that when you do get through to them?

I called for something today and when I got through the chap just sat in silence until I said something. I started off with hello, and still he never said anything back...just waited for me to ask for something - only then did he ask for my membership number. I got the impression I was disturbing him.

Is this just my experience or is it usual? It's not the first time in my brief experience.

FWIW, I called the international number.
