I'd go with the standard Kindle, if you want an e-reader. Your wife may prefer the "paperwhite" version, which has a backlight, slightly better resolution, and a touch screen, but there is a price premium.

That's not true, at least for the iPad. Natively supported in iBooks, and there are apps out there if you want to download from a library (e.g., Overdrive)
