I think short connections are part of standard operations at HKG (just like NRT and some other places). I have a trip this weekend JFK-HKG-TPE. The connect time is only 55 minutes. But they have a million flights a day to TPE so even if I misconnect I am not too concerned. From what I can decipher from ExpertFlyer, it looks like Minimum Connect Time for CX for International-International at HKG is generally 1 hour except for some flights mainly to China where MCT is 2 hours.
