Unfortunately there really isn't any meaning behind the letters except that they represent fare levels. While typically the understanding is that Y means full-fare fully-refundable, even that isn't set in stone.
The economy fare codes are in order from highest to lowest:

B
M
H
Q
K
L
U
T
E
There are some rules where the the fare code comes into play (M or higher earns 150% credit, space available upgrades for purchase may be offered for K fares and higher, etc.) but there is no meaning behind the codes other than that.
As others have mentioned, you basically have to look at the detailed fare rules for every ticket you purchase to determine what the actual terms are. Just knowing the Fare Booking Class isn't sufficient unfortunately.)
