Belatedly seconding the notion that both Hiltons are very nice properties. Haven't see the Starwood ones.

Welcome to FT! You're indeed right to be suspicious about folks who post just one time at TA.

Sorry that I can't shed light on the hotels, except that these ridiculous New Year's charges are not uncommon in overseas resorts. The only way I know to get out of them is to simply stay someplace else for that night.
