I researched about this a few years ago and unfortunately it isn't possible. The reason noise cancelling works is because the mic that picks up ambient noise is very close to the speakers i.e. your headphones/earphones. In the setting of a room, the mic that picks up the noise would be far away from you and as you move within the room, the sound waves that gets into your ears change subtly. That makes it virtually impossible for a hypothetical noise cancelling device to fire out the accurate "counter" sound waves that would cancel out the noise that you really hear from your location.
