The problem is because JFK and HNL are on a different "zone" (even if they're both part of USA), most airlines won't consider it a round trip. I.e., we can't book CGK-JFK and HNL-CGK as a roundtrip and buy JFK-HNL separately.
Do you have any advice on booking this route, in order to minimize layovers or cost, or possibly both? We are primarily Asia Miles user, but we're flexible with anything.
Right now, the best route that we've found is pretty horrendous:
CGK - HKG -JFK, JFK - LAX - HNL, HNL - HKG - CKG, booked with a combination of AA / CX
I don't see why you can't do CGK-JFK with a stopover in HNL. Try look for a TYO connection instead of HKG
