I don't think you understand the meaning of a broken fare. It does not mean that flights are necessarily in different fare classes. It is entirely
possible for a broken fare to consist of two separate fares with the same fare class.
No I understand what you're saying. I went back and looked at my fare code from this flight...looks like the one leg is KD07A0NP while the other is KA07A0UP. No idea what this means, but it makes life a lot harder.

My point is that the phone agent couldn't explain this difference and referred me to delta.com, and the kiosk computer allowed it.
FWIW I had to take the later flight for business reasons; the itinerary I had pre-Sandy had me on the direct flight back.
