I've had a chance to fly the CX 777 in biz a few times recently and prefer the EK A380. The food, alcohol, and entertainment are a step better on EK and, although the CX seat is very comfortable, it's basically a toss-up with the A380.
I agree with the OP to an extent, though -- it's pretty amazing that they have adopted a 1-2-1 configuration on the A380 yet still manage to have a narrow (and short, though that doesn't affect me) seat. The minibar is a waste of space in my opinion, and overall the space seems to be poorly used. For those outside seats that are closer to the window, there is a very narrow passageway on which to walk, and it's difficult to get up when the seat is fully flat. (First-world problem, I know.)
However, the bar on the A380 is fantastic, and most of the time I find the service better than the CX B777. (In fact, the last few times I have flown the A380, it seems like they have paid a bit more attention to me because of Gold status.)
