Yes and No.
I found the rules online a few weeks ago. In summary:
If you have another Amex-issued Amex card (eg BA Amex) you get a 6-month grace period. Your MR account remains open, and you have 6 months to either a) empty it or b) get another MR earning card.
If you do not have any other Amex-issued Amex cards, your MR account is closed along with your card account.
