2-3x this year including once two weeks ago. i bought the upgrade for her from SMF-ORD and her connecting flight canceled (Sandy) so ended up not getting it anyways. $149 on a G fare. interestingly when she was rebooked into "Y", no offer came along for an UG.

last i checked, which was about 3 months ago, the only way to "challenge" to US status was to buy into preferred then fly to keep it. if it was a pure challenge i would have done it long ago, when i lived in PHL. if something has changed recently and they are doing no-pay challenges, i'm all ears. however the US network is terrible out of SMF with PHX being the only n/s destination year round...CLT and PHL n/s are "seasonal" and noone ever knows if they'll bring them back each year...which, when headed into the interior Northeast puts me right back where i am now, connecting in ORD on UA.
