The OP's original plan was this:
SFO-FRA-ICN-SIN
(destination)
SIN-BKK-HKG-ZRH
(stopover)
ZRH-VIE
(open jaw)
BUD-FRA-SFO
The EASIER itinerary:
SFO-FRA-ICN-SIN (destination)
SIN-BKK-HKG-ZRH-VIE (stopover)
VIE-FRA-SFO
The MORE COMPLEX itinerary is actually this:
SFO-FRA-ICN-SIN (stopover)
SIN-BKK-HKG-ZRH-VIE (destination)
(surface segment) [aka open jaw]
BUD-FRA-SFO
Thanks for the reminder! I fell victim to the "ask a question, get an answer, but don't follow up" syndrome. I can confirm that I went with the "Easier" itinerary above. The more complex version wouldn't work because we want more than 24 hours in Singapore. So the only real sacrifice in the easier version is that we need to transit back to VIE before heading out. It would have been nice to go in to one city, and out the other, but I figured I was already pushing limits, and should just be happy with a combo Singapore/Europe vacation over two weeks!
Thanks for the great summary of rules. It's very much in line with what I've found.
