Exactly: seasonal events the way for us to spend points. Holidays, marathons, IT conferences, Comic-Con (!!!!) - when every hotel room in the area costs over $150. (In SD, SF usually closer to $200/night with taxes even with AAA or AARP discounts.)
So far we have not seen any point adjustments for these events.
