y2chen and al613 - I won't request a flight refund until several months AFTER the skipped flight, by which time TYP's woudl have posted.
As noted above by Happy, my experience was unintentional. But yes, the tickets were refunded long after the TYPs had posted. One day, AwardWallet reported my TYP balance to have dropped significantly. So I started investigating which is when I figured this out.

If you are someone who learns from others experience, I would strongly recommend you dropping this plan altogether, it is a lose-lose-lose situation. Yes, three times. You lose ability to match flight points for that number of points, lose your time trying to resolve the issue plus you would hate yourself for not listening to sound advice.

It is not too difficult to earn flight points legitimately by buying tickets for friends and family. Most people here have racked up hundred of thousands of flight points by doing just that. Remember, you can also earn flight points on taxes for award tickets as long the amount charged is more than $50.00.
