If the cost of petrol and diesel went up by 5 pence a litre, would you be worse or better off? An extra 1.5 pence on income tax instead maybe? I guess these alternatives would spread the impact on to families unable to afford foreign holidays, but there again APD is also levied on foreigners and indeed foreign corporations. Bear in mind that aviation is not subject to fuel duty or VAT.
