How come this is the case, when if you do AMS-LHR-JFK for example on BA it's much cheaper than direct LHR-JFK? I always assumed that this was the missing long-haul APD. Will it be different rules for BFS originating flights?

I was pricing a UuA out of BHD to JFK, APD of £130. Out of DUB no APD and £500 cheaper!
I recently booked DUB-YVR (which goes KLM via AMS) and then coming home 2 weeks later SFO-LHR (on DL via MSP) for £275 return. Add on a reward saver flight to DUB the night before, and a nice 4* hotel at DUB airport to relax on the night before our holiday, it works out at approx £330 per person return to the West Coast with just the slight inconvenience of having to fly to DUB after work on the evening before our holiday as opposed to spending it in a hotel at LHR. In my eyes, a very small inconvenience and an absolute bargain price to the West Coast!
