Neither have I, ever, and I gift-cancel-and-redeposit fairly frequently. In fact I'm working my way to a better MileSaaver award date for my daughter now as new dates open up. I've cancelled and reinstated miles for two dates already in the last three weeks.
Are you booking these tickets online? If so, your experience aligns with the rest of us.
If you're booking via phone and not being charged the telephone booking fee (and not traveling on at least one of the segments), you are certainly experiencing a rare exception.
