Due to the storm, it would have been prudent to call AA and let them know of your plans. Perhaps they would have made the changes at no cost.
In general, if you miss any segment of an itinerary, the rest of the itinerary cancels automatically - this is true on all airlines, not just AA.
Possibly if the OP calls AA he might get some consideration given the extreme weather condition. But as pointed out, this is a policy with all airlines.
