They are NOT "forcing you to pack your own lunch." You may eat prior to boarding, you may BOB.
The Hawaii flights are rather the odd ducks. They can be as long as a Transcon and sometimes a TATL flight, but are catered totally different. The airlines know they will have full flights, so they don't have to entice people with "frills." Forget what their advertising says, they are in the business to make money, not to make your flight an enjoyable experience.
many would not consider a Y meal a "frill" on a 10 hour flight. I'm sure people eat before this flight, but I would find it hard to believe that the vast majority of those would NOT get hungry, again, around the 5-7 hour mark.
