It would seem Captain Schmidt's link gave you the technical info you need but, for what it's worth, I would NOT recommend the French embassy or consulates - they are typically overloaded (read: slow to process and long queues) and lack that friendly je ne sais quoi...
We found the Polish very helpful in Edinburgh.
theoretically, of course, you should apply to your main destination country (or country of arrival) but it's unlikely to be a problem in practice.
