British Airways will through check bags to any airline as long as it is one ticket. If it is seperate tickets then it must to BA or oneworld.

Not sure where Customer Service are getting their info from but BA can even give you a boarding pass on Emirates, Virgin Atlantic, United and many other airlines that they're not in alliance with. Through checking bags is the easy bit.
