Due to the UA832 Debacle (see earlier post), I now have about $2000 of E- certificates and I have a lot of questions:

1) Are these considered gift certificates when using them via united.com? There are no Pin numbers so this is why I assume they are gift certificates.

2) Can I use them to purchase travel for anyone or only the person the compensation was for? I'm thinking of pooling them to buy one expensive ticket rather than many cheaper ones.

3) Can they be used for international travel? The instructions were not clear.

4) Can you somehow deposit these into your account rather than only redeeming then when make a purchase?

They are not really gift certificates because you still have to pay the taxes and/or fees I believe.

With the older UA ecerts anyone can use them as long as the person who got the cert did not sell, barter it to you, but I got one of the newer ones and it states that "This Certificate is non transferable and may not be sold or bartered. However- the original recipient of this certificate may arrange travel for another person if done without selling or bartering this certificate."

Usually its only for domestic travel, but IIRC there is a thread where some people successfully had UA convert it to a International e-cert, im not sure about the present day process. You can try, do a dummy booking to an international destination and see if it will let you do it, usually the error notice will come up and don't worry it won't buy the ticket until you select purchase, etc.

For the fourth one, if you can honestly find a way to deposit it into the MP account I would like to know, AFAIK you cannot and if you buy a ticket with the cert and refund it you will not get the value of the certificate back.

BTW, it would help if you can tell us what characters your ecert starts with... is it a 12TCVA? 016? 1016? because the latter of the two do not have a pin, the 12TCVA one has the pin #
