I attempted to book LAX-DFW-LHR over the phone with LAX-DFW in coach and DFW-LHR in first (special fare) and I had a similar experience to you. The price I was quoted was considerably higher than purchasing the two segments separately, presumably because the 'special fare' was unavailable to the EXP desk.
