That's how one way fares work on non-discount airlines.
Each fare has rules - the cheap one says it must be a round trip. The even cheaper might say it must be Saturday stay etc.
The one way is probably refundable y,b,m fare. That's just how world works.
If you don't make a habit of discarding returns you will be fine.
