If you have SPG Gold from Amex, they've already registered you.

Like all programs, spend some time in the appropriate forum to learn the fine details on how to maximize your points. Generally speaking, SPG's Cash & Points program offers the best value. And, hotel costs differ whether you're in Asia, Europe, and NA so it's impossible to answer the points needed for a "half decent" hotel room.
