No, you were impacted by an emergency in your personal life. As multiple posters have said, AA is NOT allowed to modify a BA issued ticket unless they had to cancel your flight, etc. Even if you could have easily called AA, they cannot touch the ticket.

It sucks when something like this happens, and I feel bad, but it is not the airlines responsibility to waive binding rules because of you personal situation. Travel Insurance is made for situations like this...
