(As platbrownguy said, I only mention our household Avios supply to make the point that the 9,000 Avios is not that big of a loss. No offense intended.)

Globalizer, I have a scan of my ticket receipt that I'd be happy to email you if you like. As to the "plenty of seats" claim, at boarding the gate agent announced that they were opening the flight to folks holding tickets for the next flight. Even so they did not fill every seat on that small plane.

As a first-order response, I plan to dump our BA Visa in favor of a Southwest credit card and avoid AA in the future. Any other ideas?
I would definitely keep on calling / writing. Surely the airline must accept some responsibility for this due to the OP not being able to contact them when she needed to, when she might have been able to change the return of her award ticket.

This was an opportunity for BA and /or AA to help out a BAEC member with a problem at little or no cost to the airline. They had the opportunity to just to the decent thing, even if they didn't have to, to cover themselves in glory, to keep a member loyal for ever, to turn that member into a champion for BA, but instead they have chosen to make a difficult time for the OP even more difficult.

to BA.
