I don't think you get a notification: just a sudden change of status. That's all that happened to me, and others have reported the same.

I don't recall reading that it can be used to retain status. Did you see somewhere that it can? I thought (probably because I'd never thought of using it for anything else

) that it was just a way to get that initial uplift to Gold more quickly.
