And really, don't talk to the people on buses? You do know that there's no shame in being poor, right? Just because some may have different colored skin or be wearing threadbare clothing doesn't make them a criminal. A lot of people, even in Detroit, take public transit because they have no other option. Taking a bus to get to work doesn't make someone a bad person, even in Detroit.
I don't think the OP was criticizing poor people or being lazy. If that area is dangerous than I would rather pay cab fare or $20 for parking than risk being mugged.
I didn't see him mention race at all either. Having spent time in Detroit for work there are areas of Detroit I wouldn't walk in alone. There are areas here in the MSP area where I wouldn't walk in due to crime. Has nothing to do with race or economic status.
