You can certainly travel TO France (and beyond) on your French passport, but the airline will not let you board back to the US on an expired US passport. To use your French passport, you'd have to apply (and be approved) for ESTA. Then you can possibly take it up with US CBP when you arrive at your US port of entry... Would not recommend this, though.
