Are you trying to insult or bait me? You are quite new here. Name-calling
i.s. n.o.t. a.c.c.e.p.t.a.b.l.e. b.e.h.a.v.i.o.r.

A 5-min walk is not, "right around the corner". Walking this route solo,
or in a small group, is an unnecessary and unwise risk.

> ... how lazy are people that ...

More insults/bait?

I am happy that your gambit to save money worked. Very creative. Kudos.
For me, it ain't a matter of lazy/cheap. It's a matter of risk mgt. I live
here. I volunteer downtown. I know the area reasonably well. You live in
Chicago. I used to live in Chicago. Much of downtown Detroit is like the
South Loop circa 1985. Or; Sheridan & Lawrence (Newtown) in the same
period. (FWIW; I lived in both areas in the mid-1980's.)

> And really, don't talk to the people on buses?

Correct ... particularly; AT the bus stops. A travel writer was mugged
twice in one weekend this summer at bus stops. Locals struck up a
conversation, then beat her, and took her gear. Both times she went to
the nearest merchants asking for help. Both times, they ordered her out
of their businesses, without assisting her.

Thankfully, she has not (yet?) published THAT story. Why? Dunno.
But I did exchange several emails with her. She admits that she ignored
local advice that what she was doing increased her risk. But twice? In
the same weekend? Good grief. She said that her intution was wrong.
Yup ... and she failed to recalibrate her intuition after it failed her the first
time.

Yet more lecturing? Good grief. Yes; thugs comes in all colors, sizes,
shapes and sexes. It's the females that scare me the most.

All large cities have areas where the criminals rule. Detroit has more of
them, and they are bigger areas. The DPD force was recently reduced,
significantly so. Those that remain are forced to work 12-hour shifts.
Think: Work Slowdown. They probably are not going to respond to a
simple mugging/beating. EMS response times are also, waaay longer than
the national average.
