All that being said, I would like to plan a trip for two and really don't know how to get the best value out of my miles. Should I buy tickets and then use the miles to upgrade, should I buy tickets with miles and then use GPAs to upgrade (can I even do that??), or a combination of both? Also, since I only fly domestic I don't know what the best international flights would be to take. I know there is a direct from LAX to SIN on Singapore air and I have heard that is a long flight and supposedly really fun in business class.

Generally, I am looking for advice on some fun places to go internationally and how to best utilize my miles to get there.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
Welcome to FT.

United is a Star A partner so you can fly on a combination of airlines. SQ does not allow Bus. Class seats on such awards ....

You need 120,000 mile PP to fly Business Class for a round trip. I am doing ORD LHR BKK BOM BKK NRT ORD on such a ticket on 3 airlines (UA, Thai< ANA) ! Use lounges at all stops. There is a stay in India and Tokyo on this ticket. (Tokyo is a stopover).

If you want to spen miles, Intl. is the best value. You can go nonstop to China on United....etc.

If you are short on miles, you can buy the remainder, GF can get a UA card, transfer from hotel partners etc.

Come back with Qs. Good luck.
